The highly anticipated Finalissima between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled after plans to stage the match in Qatar fell through amid regional political tensions and unsuccessful attempts to relocate the fixture.
UEFA confirmed that the match, originally scheduled for 27 March, will not take place following extensive discussions with the organising authorities in Qatar. The game was set to pit the winners of UEFA Euro 2024, Spain, against the champions of the 2024 Copa América, Argentina, in the latest edition of the intercontinental showpiece created through a partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL.
European football’s governing body said it was “a source of great disappointment” that circumstances had prevented the teams from competing for the trophy in Qatar, a country it praised for its proven ability to host world-class sporting events. UEFA also thanked the Qatari organising committee and local authorities for their efforts and expressed hope that peace would soon return to the region.
In an effort to preserve the fixture, UEFA explored several alternative solutions after the match in Qatar became unfeasible. One proposal was to move the game to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the original date with an equal allocation of supporters from both nations. However, the Argentine Football Association declined that option.

A second proposal suggested staging the Finalissima over two legs, the first at the Santiago Bernabéu on 27 March and the return fixture in Buenos Aires during an international window before UEFA Euro 2028 and the Copa América 2028. That option was also rejected by Argentina.
UEFA then sought confirmation that the match could proceed on 27 March or alternatively 30 March if a neutral venue in Europe was secured, but this plan was likewise turned down. Argentina proposed holding the game after the next World Cup, though Spain were unable to accommodate that timing in their schedule. Argentina later indicated it could only play on 31 March, a date that proved unworkable for organisers.
With no viable agreement reached, UEFA ultimately decided to cancel the 2026 edition of the Finalissima.
The governing body expressed gratitude to Real Madrid CF for their willingness to host the match at short notice, as well as to the Royal Spanish Football Federation for its flexibility throughout the negotiations.
The Finalissima was revived as part of the strengthened cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL, bringing together the champions of Europe and South America in a celebration of elite international football. Argentina, the reigning world champions, won the inaugural modern edition in 2022 with a 3–0 victory over Italy national football team at Wembley Stadium in London.
