Montpellier HSC has strongly denied accusations made by former player Mary Fowler in her newly released autobiography, saying it was “amazed” by the allegations and is prepared to pursue legal action to defend the club’s reputation.
Fowler claims in her book that she experienced racism during her time at the French club, including receiving bananas while other departing players were given flowers in 2022. Her account has drawn widespread attention, with headlines suggesting she was subjected to “serious acts of racism.”
In a statement issued Thursday, Montpellier condemned the characterization, calling the implication that the club is a racist institution “unacceptable.” The club said it “will not allow defamation to prevail over the truth” and is considering all legal options.
Montpellier insisted the farewell-gift narrative is factually incorrect. According to the club, only players whose contracts were expiring on June 1, 2022, after the final home match against Bordeaux, received flowers. The club said Fowler and the teammate she references were still under contract until June 30, 2023, and therefore were not part of the customary farewell ceremony.

“It would have been indelicate for the club to offer a ‘farewell gift’ to players who were not leaving,” the statement said.
The club also rejected Fowler’s description of alleged racist comments made inside the dressing room that day. After speaking to those present, Montpellier said “no element makes it possible to corroborate” her account, nor was anyone able to identify the alleged author of the remarks. The club added that no such incident was reported at the time and said it would have taken “all necessary measures” had any racist behavior been brought to its attention.
Montpellier emphasized that racism “is a serious subject that cannot be exploited” and reiterated its commitment to combating discrimination in all forms.
