Brandon Williams, a former Manchester United defender, has been handed a suspended prison sentence following a high-speed car crash in Cheshire that occurred in August 2023.
The 24-year-old was found guilty of dangerous driving after his Audi A3 reached speeds nearing 100mph on the A34 near Handforth before colliding with a Ford Fiesta and crashing into the central reservation. At the time, Williams was on loan to Ipswich Town.
In a hearing at Chester Crown Court on Friday, Recorder Eric Lamb imposed a 14-month jail term, suspended for two years. Williams was also disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work as part of a community sentence.
“Williams admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance and was sentenced to a 14-month jail term, suspended for two years.”
The incident, which took place on 20 August 2023, unfolded in dramatic fashion. Witnesses observed the footballer driving erratically, and footage showed a female passenger filming as the car hurtled down the road. Chester Crown Court heard he had a balloon at his mouth at the time of the crash, and the vehicle was clearly out of control.
“The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the woman was seen filming at one point on her phone, adding that it was clear to witnesses that the car was out of control when it collided with the other car.”
Significant damage was reported: Williams’ Audi suffered extensive impact, the Ford Fiesta lost a wheel and sustained damage to its offside, and the central reservation was also hit. Emergency services treated Williams in hospital for injuries before he was taken into custody in Middlewich.
“The full-back, who was contracted to Manchester United at the time, was with a female passenger and was driving at up to 99mph in a 70mph zone.”
Williams, who came through Manchester United’s youth ranks, had his departure from the club confirmed last June following the expiry of his contract. His court appearance, dressed in a black suit, came after he entered guilty pleas in March.
“Williams left Manchester United when his contract expired last June.”
