Violent Clashes Erupt in Paris Ahead of Champions League Semi-Final Between PSG and Arsenal

Tensions flared in Paris ahead of the highly anticipated Champions League semi-final second leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, as violent scenes involving PSG supporters and riot police overshadowed the build-up to the match.

Disturbing footage circulated on social media showed lines of riot police confronting and dispersing groups of PSG fans near the Parc des Princes. In one video, officers in full gear were seen forcing crowds down a street, prompting hundreds to flee. Reports from TNT Sports confirmed that tear gas was used during the unrest, with many fans attempting to shield their faces with scarves and clothing as they retreated.

A French journalist described the chaos, saying riot police "teargassed entire streets" after large groups of fans ignited fireworks. Additional security checkpoints were reportedly installed around the stadium to prevent ticketless entry following the incidents.

Despite the unrest, PSG remained focused on their Champions League ambitions, now just one step away from their first-ever title. Inter Milan await in the final after a dramatic 7-6 aggregate victory over Barcelona.

Ahead of the match, Arsenal had issued a warning to their travelling contingent of 2,000 fans, urging them to remain cautious while in the French capital. The club's official guidance stated:
"Supporters are strongly advised to avoid the Auteuil suburb of Paris and should take note of this when travelling to the Parc des Princes on matchday. Street crime, including pickpocketing, can take place in Paris. Supporters are advised to be vigilant, take sensible precautions and ensure they have valid travel insurance."

Concerns were raised over Arsenal’s decision to hand out red and white scarves to fans collecting match tickets, with critics warning that visibly displaying club colours could increase the risk of targeted violence.

The unrest intensified following PSG’s opening goal, with riot police once again deploying tear gas as supporters gathered outside the stadium. One video showed a crowd surrounding a bus before dispersing amid missile throwing and a heavy police response. French reporter Luc Auffret posted footage from the scene, claiming the "situation deteriorated" after Fabian Ruiz's 27th-minute strike.

Celebrations after PSG's 3-1 aggregate win reignited tensions, drawing further police intervention. Officers fired warning shots and moved to disperse crowds after full-time as jubilant fans filled the streets.

Authorities had deployed a force of 2,000 officers for the occasion, with many involved in managing disturbances before kickoff. Police were filmed pushing back large groups of fans and attempting to restore order in the vicinity of the stadium.

Arsenal’s travel guidance mirrored warnings issued to other English clubs visiting Paris recently. Last month, Aston Villa fans were told to be “streetwise” by former striker Gabby Agbonlahor after similar scenes played out ahead of their own clash with PSG.
"I think fans have to be careful tonight," Agbonlahor said. "It’s an amazing city, but it’s the sort of place and night where fans have to be a bit streetwise going to the game."

The volatile atmosphere leading into Wednesday's match was a stark reminder of the heightened emotions surrounding Europe’s premier football tournament—and the serious security challenges it brings.
