A fan has tragically died after falling from an upper tier at Munich’s Allianz Arena during the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain on Sunday night.
The incident occurred during extra time, with tensions running high both on and off the field. According to a UEFA official—who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the event—the supporter sustained fatal injuries after falling into a media area below.
The match, which ended in a 5-3 penalty shootout victory for Portugal, continued while the individual received emergency medical attention. Despite efforts from medics, the person could not be revived.
"There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET)," UEFA confirmed in a statement. "Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time."
The fatal fall occurred in the final moments of the match, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a dramatic and high-stakes contest between the two European rivals.
At his post-match press conference, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente opened with a heartfelt message:
"I want to express my condolences to the family of a fan who has died," De la Fuente said. "That has made us realize what is important in life."
He had also expressed condolences earlier, saying, “Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today. My condolences to the family.”
Portugal's Nuno Mendes, named man of the match, was also visibly moved when he learned of the incident after the game.
"I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died. It casts a pall on our victory today," Mendes said.
While Portugal celebrated another major trophy, the night ended in grief for one family and a stark reminder of life’s fragility for everyone in attendance.
