Tottenham Hotspur fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in a tense Premier League encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Ange Postecoglou's side showed resilience after a sloppy first half, but the manager acknowledged improvements are needed ahead of their crucial Europa League second-leg clash with AZ Alkmaar.
Spurs entered the match under pressure following a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the Netherlands midweek, and their struggles continued when Marcus Tavernier put the Cherries ahead before halftime. Cristian Romero’s return after a lengthy injury spell did little to settle the hosts, as Bournemouth doubled their lead in the 65th minute through Evanilson, sending anxiety through the home crowd.
However, Tottenham found a way back into the contest just minutes later, when Pape Matar Sarr’s speculative cross found its way into the net. The equalizer arrived in the 84th minute when Son Heung-min won and converted a penalty, ensuring Spurs avoided another damaging defeat.
Postecoglou admitted his side contributed to the chaotic nature of the game, particularly in the first half, where careless passing put them under unnecessary pressure.
“Chaotic game, for sure. We added to the chaos, and a lot of it was self-inflicted, especially in the first half,” Postecoglou said. “At 2-0 down, it would have been easy for the players to let the game slip away, but credit to them, they fought back and got something from it.”
The draw does little to bolster Tottenham’s push for a top-four finish, but it provides a morale boost ahead of Thursday’s decisive Europa League fixture. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of a strong start against AZ Alkmaar and called on the home crowd to provide vocal support.
“The AZ fans gave their team a real boost last week, and we need our supporters to do the same,” he said. “If we can start strong, it’ll lift the atmosphere, which will be crucial for us.”
Despite the nervy nature of the contest, the match saw the return of key players. Romero played his first game since December, while Micky van de Ven also made his comeback after a three-month absence. Their presence will be vital as Spurs prepare for a do-or-die clash in Europe.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola reflected on a missed opportunity, as his side could have climbed to sixth with a win.
“Yes, we’re disappointed,” Iraola admitted. “A point away at Tottenham isn’t bad, but given the way the game went, we feel like we lost two points rather than gained one.”
With a crucial European fixture looming, Spurs will need to build on their late comeback and find greater consistency if they hope to advance in the Europa League and salvage their campaign.
