Kylian Mbappé has rejoined Real Madrid’s training camp after being discharged from hospital, following treatment for an acute case of gastroenteritis. The France international had been absent from the squad's recent activities in the United States, including Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Al Hilal at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Real Madrid confirmed in a statement on Thursday: “Our player Kylian Mbappé was discharged from hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid camp. Mbappé will continue with specific medical treatment and will progressively rejoin team activity.”
Mbappé, who netted 43 goals across all competitions last season, missed the Club World Cup opener at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami due to illness. He had not trained in the lead-up to the game, and a fever kept him out of the team’s open session in Palm Beach Gardens earlier in the week.
In an earlier announcement, the club revealed the forward’s condition: “Our player Kylian Mbappé is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment.”
Real coach Xabi Alonso had hoped the World Cup winner might be fit to return in time for their second group match on Sunday against Pachuca in Charlotte. However, the nature of the illness — also known as the stomach flu, with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea — leaves some uncertainty over his availability.
Mbappé had only just joined the squad after representing France in the UEFA Nations League, scoring in their third-place playoff victory against Germany. He trained with the team at their Valdebebas base last Friday before flying to the U.S. with his teammates.
In his absence, youngster Gonzalo García led the line and scored Madrid’s only goal against Al Hilal, before Rúben Neves equalized for the Saudi Arabian side. Federico Valverde had a chance to seal the win but had his stoppage-time penalty saved by Yassine Bono.
Madrid, currently second in their group behind RB Salzburg, are looking to claim their first trophy under new manager Alonso. The club also bolstered their squad recently with the signings of defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
