Cardiff City are facing a temporary transfer embargo after failing to submit their annual accounts to the EFL by the required deadline, a situation the club insists is purely administrative and close to being resolved.
The embargo was triggered during the January transfer window under the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability regulations, which require clubs to lodge their accounts by December 31 each season. According to the league’s website, the sanction relates specifically to “P&S Rule 2.4.1 - Non-submission of Annual Accounts”.
As a result, Cardiff are currently unable to register new signings until the paperwork is filed. However, club officials are confident the issue will be addressed shortly and do not believe it will disrupt their transfer plans.
Cardiff released a statement to explain the situation, saying: “The club has no financial concerns. All necessary paperwork will be submitted in the coming days, this issue will be resolved and any embargo will be removed.

“We wish to stress that this will not impact our January recruitment strategy.”
The Bluebirds reiterated their position in a further brief statement later, adding: “Cardiff City FC are aware of reports this morning and wishes to clarify the situation.

Under EFL rules, clubs were required to submit accounts for the 2024/25 financial year by the end of last month, a deadline Cardiff appear to have missed. The club expects the embargo to be lifted by the end of next week once the documentation is processed.
The development comes despite strong performances on the pitch, with Cardiff currently sitting top of League One following an impressive first half of the season under head coach Brian Barry-Murphy.
