The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena was halted less than six minutes after kick-off with the score at 0-0, after multiple pyrotechnics were ignited despite security checks, sniffer dogs, and additional preventive measures implemented by the club.
“The safety of spectators and players has been put at risk. That is unacceptable,” Ajax said. “We emphatically distance ourselves from this misconduct. Fireworks do not belong in the stadium.”

Supporters in the affected section had been searched on entry, and sniffer dogs were used both before the stadium opened and during spectator arrivals. Despite the enhanced precautions, Ajax acknowledged they were “not able to prevent this situation.”

The club confirmed it will examine camera footage and explore other methods to identify those responsible, promising “appropriate measures” if perpetrators are found.
The Dutch FA has scheduled the remainder of the match to be played on Tuesday at 14:30, with the fixture to be completed behind closed doors.
Ajax reiterated their regret over the disruption, adding: “We offer our apologies to everyone who has been affected in any way.”
