Sunderland AFC have been fined by the Premier League after admitting to multiple breaches of rules relating to kick-off and restart timings during the 2025/26 season.
The newly promoted club accepted that it failed to comply with Premier League Rule L.33, which governs the timely start and resumption of matches, in 11 separate fixtures. The breaches were linked to delays in either kick-offs or restarts.
A sanction agreement between Sunderland and the Premier League has now been ratified by an independent judicial panel, bringing the matter to a close without the need for a formal hearing.
While the exact financial penalty has not been disclosed in the publicly released version of the agreement, Sunderland has agreed to pay a fine as well as cover the costs of the investigation and proceedings.
In a statement, the Premier League emphasised the importance of strict adherence to scheduling rules, noting that punctual kick-offs and restarts are essential to maintaining the competition’s professional standards and ensuring broadcast commitments are met.
As part of the agreement, Sunderland has committed to reinforcing compliance internally. The club will remind players and staff of their responsibilities and implement additional measures aimed at preventing further breaches.
The Premier League acknowledged Sunderland’s cooperation throughout the investigation, as well as the club’s admission of wrongdoing and steps taken to address the issue. However, it also highlighted the number of offences, spanning 11 matches, as a significant factor in determining the sanction.
By entering into the agreement, Sunderland waived its right to contest the charges before an independent commission and accepted that the punishment imposed was fair and proportionate.
The case is now considered fully resolved under Premier League regulations.
