An alleged incident of racist abuse overshadowed the Tyne-Wear derby on Saturday, as Sunderland confirmed that defender Lutsharel Geertruida reported being targeted during the match at St James' Park.
In a statement released shortly after the fixture, Sunderland AFC said it was aware of the reported abuse and offered its full support to the player, praising his response in bringing the matter to the attention of match officials.
“We stand with Lutsharel, who has our complete backing, and we commend him for displaying bravery and leadership by reporting this incident,” the club said. “Racism is completely unacceptable. It is abhorrent, and has no place in our game or in society.”

The Premier League echoed Sunderland’s stance, confirming it has offered full support to Geertruida and reiterating its zero-tolerance policy on discrimination.
“There is no room for racism in our game or society,” the league said. “Any individuals identified and found guilty of discrimination will face the strongest possible consequences.”
Newcastle United also issued a statement following the match, confirming it is aware of the allegation involving a visiting player and a member of the crowd. The club pledged to work closely with authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.

“Our stance is clear, we do not tolerate discrimination of any form,” Newcastle said. “We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.”
The club added that football “must be a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, without exception,” and stressed there can be “no tolerance, no excuses, and no ambiguity” when dealing with such incidents.
Investigations into the alleged abuse are now expected to proceed, with both clubs and league authorities aligned in their commitment to take decisive action.
