Two Championship coaches have been handed touchline bans and fines following a heated confrontation during a match between Sheffield Wednesday and Watford FC earlier this month.
An independent Regulatory Commission convened by The Football Association ruled that Craig Mudd and Karim Belhocine were both guilty of misconduct after their involvement in a second-half altercation during the 10 March fixture.
The incident, which occurred around the 62nd minute, saw both coaches leave their respective technical areas and engage in a physical confrontation following a foul near the touchline. While referee Elliot Bell did not witness the clash directly, he acted on the advice of the fourth official, who described the exchange as “aggressive” and involving multiple pushes between the two men.
Both Mudd and Belhocine were shown red cards at the time and later admitted breaching FA Rule E3.1, which requires participants to act in the best interests of the game and prohibits improper or aggressive behaviour.
In their written submissions, each coach attempted to shift responsibility onto the other. Mudd claimed his actions were “reactive and protective,” while Belhocine argued he was responding to provocation. However, the Commission rejected both versions as incomplete, concluding that the pair were “equally to blame” for escalating the situation.

The panel found that neither coach needed to leave their technical area and that their actions contributed to a wider melee involving players and staff. It also noted the presence of an injured player nearby, highlighting the potential risk of harm caused by the confrontation.
“Their actions portrayed the game in a negative light,” the Commission stated, adding that both individuals had to be restrained by colleagues as tensions flared.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the Commission opted against harsher sanctions, taking into account early admissions, expressions of remorse, and the relatively brief nature of the clash. Belhocine’s previously clean disciplinary record was also considered, while Mudd’s past offence was deemed unrelated.
Both coaches have been issued one-match touchline bans, to be served during their respective clubs’ next competitive fixtures, and fined £1,200 each.
The FA had pushed for stronger penalties, including bans alongside fines exceeding standard levels, citing the physical nature of the altercation and the experience of both individuals. However, the Commission determined that a single-match suspension, combined with financial sanctions, was proportionate.
The ruling can be appealed under FA regulations.
