Fulham head coach Marco Silva has been suspended for one match and fined £90,000 after being found guilty of misconduct by an independent Regulatory Commission of The Football Association.
The decision follows comments Silva made during a post-match interview after Fulham’s Premier League clash with West Ham United on March 4, 2026. The Portuguese manager had criticised decisions involving VAR official John Brooks, suggesting bias and questioning the integrity of officiating.
In its written decision, the Commission ruled that Silva’s remarks breached FA Rule E3.1, which prohibits comments that bring the game into disrepute or question the integrity of match officials.
The panel determined that Silva’s statements went beyond general criticism, instead constituting a “personal verbal attack” on the VAR official. It highlighted that Silva not only referenced specific decisions from the match but also implied a pattern of bias in previous fixtures.
The Commission rejected arguments from Fulham FC that the comments should be viewed as relatively minor or made in the heat of the moment. Instead, it concluded that the remarks sat at the “higher end” of misconduct cases due to their direct and repeated nature.
Silva’s disciplinary history played a significant role in the severity of the punishment. The Commission noted that this was his third breach of FA rules relating to media comments in four seasons, with prior sanctions including substantial fines for similar conduct.

Previous rulings had warned that further offences could lead to stronger penalties, including sporting sanctions. That warning was acted upon in this case, with the Commission imposing an immediate one-match touchline ban.
Although Silva admitted the charge and expressed remorse, the Commission gave limited weight to these factors. It noted that the evidence, particularly video footage of the interview, left little room for dispute, reducing the value of his early admission.
Fulham had argued that frustration over controversial refereeing decisions throughout the season contributed to Silva’s reaction, as well as the fact the comments were made shortly after the match and in a second language. However, the Commission considered these points as context rather than meaningful mitigation.
Silva will serve an immediate one-match suspension from the touchline in domestic competition, while his fine, initially set at £120,000, was reduced by 25% to £90,000 following his admission.
The Commission also declined to suspend any part of the punishment, stating there were no “clear and compelling reasons” to do so given Silva’s disciplinary record.
The decision remains subject to appeal under FA regulations.
