Premier League Hit Leeds United With £120,000 Fine

Leeds United FC have been fined £120,000 by the Premier League after admitting to multiple breaches of matchday timing regulations during the 2025/26 season.

In a sanction agreement ratified earlier this month, the club accepted that they had delayed kick-offs and second-half restarts without good reason on nine separate occasions, breaching Rule L.33 of the league’s regulations.

The infringements occurred between August 2025 and January 2026, with delays ranging from just over a minute to nearly three minutes. Fixtures affected included matches against Everton FC, Newcastle United FC, Manchester City FC and Brentford FC.

Leeds had already been fined incrementally for their first eight breaches, with penalties increasing as the offences continued. The ninth breach, a delayed restart against Fulham FC in January, triggered the £120,000 sanction, which includes an additional £20,000 uplift for repeat offending.

The club has apologised for the incidents and acknowledged the need for improvement, stating that ensuring compliance with match timing rules has become a key objective for both staff and players.

Under the terms of the agreement, any further breaches this season will result in significantly steeper financial penalties. Fines will start at £100,000 for delays exceeding one minute and could rise to £170,000 for delays beyond two minutes, with additional cumulative increases of £20,000 for each subsequent offence.

There are also caps in place, with maximum fines set at £200,000 for delays under two and a half minutes and £250,000 for longer disruptions.

The agreement, approved by an independent disciplinary panel, allows the Premier League to conclude proceedings without further hearings, provided Leeds adhere to the conditions set out.

The Yorkshire club must settle the £120,000 fine within 14 days, while any future penalties incurred will also be payable within the same timeframe upon receipt of an invoice.

The case highlights the league’s increasing focus on maintaining strict matchday schedules, with repeated delays now subject to escalating sanctions.
