Michael Carrick has offered a mixed update on Manchester United’s squad ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash with Brentford at Old Trafford, with several key defenders still unavailable but others nearing a return.
United will be boosted by the return of Harry Maguire, who is back from suspension after missing recent matches, including the narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea. That result highlighted the squad’s resilience, with Noussair Mazraoui stepping into central defence alongside Ayden Heaven in the absence of several senior options.
However, Lisandro Martínez remains sidelined as he serves the second game of a three-match ban following his red card against Leeds United. Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu is also unavailable, although he is making progress in his recovery from a muscle injury.

Keep building, Matta — we're all right behind you! ❤️
There is cautious optimism surrounding Leny Yoro, who is pushing to return after picking up a knock in training last week. Carrick, though, stopped short of confirming whether the young defender will be fit in time to face Brentford.
Matthijs de Ligt continues to be ruled out with a persistent back issue that has kept him sidelined since late November, further limiting Carrick’s defensive options.
Despite these absences, Carrick has continued to integrate younger players into the squad. Shea Lacey, Jack Moorhouse and Sonny Aljofree were all involved in first-team training on Thursday, while Jim Thwaites recently earned his first inclusion in a senior matchday squad during the win at Chelsea.

United’s strong recent form has kept them firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification. The club currently sits third in the Premier League table with five games remaining and could mathematically secure a top-four finish within the next two rounds of fixtures.
A key driver behind their success has been Bruno Fernandes, who is enjoying a standout campaign. The Portuguese playmaker has registered 18 league assists, leaving him just two short of equalling the Premier League’s single-season record.
With momentum building and crucial players edging closer to returns, United will look to take another step toward securing their place among Europe’s elite when they host Brentford on Monday.
