A scheduled Swiss Super League clash between FC Basel 1893 and FC Thun has been postponed after a fire caused extensive damage to Basel’s first-team facilities at St. Jakob-Park.
The incident occurred late on Friday night, with flames and heavy smoke engulfing the club’s dressing room area. While no injuries were reported, the material damage is significant, with the entire first-team locker room complex reportedly destroyed.
Key areas affected include player changing rooms, equipment storage spaces, and coaching facilities. Offices used by staff, physiotherapy zones, and sanitary areas were also damaged in the blaze. The fire is understood to have wiped out essential matchday and training equipment, including kits, boots, and medical supplies, items that cannot be quickly replaced.

As a result of the destruction and the subsequent sealing of the stadium’s internal areas by authorities, FC Basel confirmed they were unable to fulfil their away fixture against Thun, which had been scheduled for Saturday.
The Swiss Football League has since approved Basel’s request to postpone the match, with a new date yet to be determined.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with officials yet to confirm how the incident started. FC Basel remains in close contact with authorities and league organisers as they assess the damage and plan their next steps.
Further updates, including a rescheduled fixture date, are expected in due course.
