Real Madrid are seeking to postpone the start of their 2025-26 LaLiga campaign, citing player welfare concerns stemming from their involvement in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Sources confirmed to ESPN that the club has formally asked LaLiga to reschedule their August 19 home fixture against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The request comes as Xabi Alonso’s team prepares to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinal in New Jersey on Wednesday. Progress in that competition would further reduce Madrid’s off-season window, violating the six-week minimum of rest and preparation time established in agreement with LaLiga, Atlético Madrid, and the Spanish Players’ Union (AFE).
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has long criticized the Club World Cup’s growing footprint, warning it disrupts "the entire ecosystem of national leagues, especially in Europe."
Real Madrid’s proposal, first reported by Carrusel Deportivo, suggests moving the Osasuna clash to October 29 — a date that coincides with the Copa del Rey’s first round, which neither club would participate in. The club claims that both Osasuna and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) are already in agreement with the new date.
Real Madrid have asked LALIGA for their league opener against Osasuna to be rescheduled because of their involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup, sources have told ESPN.

The AFE confirmed to ESPN that it sent a formal letter on Monday to LaLiga, RFEF, Real Madrid, and Osasuna, urging all parties to honor the agreed-upon rest period for players recovering from international club competition.
In their communication with Tebas, Madrid pointed to prior conversations held before the tournament began, during which a postponement was considered a possibility.
However, the proposed October date presents new logistical challenges. The match would fall just three days after Madrid’s first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona and shortly before a demanding away trip to Valencia — potentially creating a high-intensity 10-day stretch for Alonso’s squad.
Should the request be denied, the AFE could join Madrid in escalating the issue further, possibly sparking a wider debate about fixture congestion and player safety ahead of the new domestic season. “If Tebas rejects the request, Madrid, with the backing of the AFE, may escalate the issue, potentially triggering a broader dispute over player welfare and scheduling fairness ahead of the new season.”
